Answer:

A vent is a pipe or opening that provides for the circulation of air in a plumbing system and reductes the pressure on trap seals. There are three main functions of a vent:

  • to maintain the atmospheric pressure in the system
  • to prevent reduction of flow and loss of the seal at the trap
  • to prevent sewer gas from entering the building
