Ribbon Cutting for new Annapolis DPW building

May 16, 2023

On Friday, May 5, 2023- Mayor Gavin Buckley, alongside esteemed city officials and key stakeholders, gathered to commemorate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the brand-new Department of Public Works (DPW) building on Hudson Street. The $10.8 million facility represents a significant step forward for the city, consolidating multiple operations under one roof and streamlining the management of crucial services that enhance the quality of life for Annapolis residents.

The state-of-the-art DPW facility at 39 Hudson Street boasts a ground-up design that optimizes efficiency and functionality.  The building is a “Silver” L.E.E.D. building (Leadership, Energy, Environmental Design). It occupies 3.35 acres of land, with the rear section dedicated to the operations yard and storage, the salt barn, heavy equipment parking, and staff and visitor parking. The front section of the lot houses administrative office space, vehicle repair bays, storage, dedicated public meeting space, and employee amenities such as showers and a lunchroom.

The consolidation of operations within the new DPW building marks a significant achievement for the city of Annapolis. The Department of Public Works is responsible for an extensive portfolio of work, ranging from street maintenance, snow removal, and traffic control to solid waste collection and disposal, water distribution, wastewater collection, stormwater management, fleet repair, and facilities maintenance. By centralizing these critical functions, the DPW can now operate more seamlessly and efficiently, resulting in improved service delivery and responsiveness to the needs of the community. The building’s design and layout were meticulously planned to accommodate the specific requirements of each department, fostering collaboration and enhancing productivity among the DPW teams.

The successful completion of the DPW facility was made possible through a collaborative effort between BuilderGuru Contracting, Hammond Wilson Architects, Bay Engineering, and KCI Technologies. Each entity brought its expertise to the table, ensuring the design-build project was executed to the highest standards.

BuilderGuru Contracting skillfully oversaw the construction process, implementing the vision created by Hammond Wilson Architects. The architects’ thoughtful design not only met the functional needs of the DPW but also harmonized with the surrounding area, contributing to the neighborhood’s aesthetic appeal.

Bay Engineering played an integral role in the project by providing essential civil engineering services and ensuring the facility had the necessary infrastructure to support the DPW’s extensive operations. Their expertise in stormwater management, utility systems, and civil design was instrumental in the project’s success. KCI Technologies was the owner’s representative for the project and interfaced with BGC and the design team to represent the City of Annapolis’s decision-making.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including Mayor Gavin Buckley, Ward 3 Alderwoman Rhonda Pindell Charles, City Manager Michael Mallinoff, and Department of Public Works Director David Jarrell. These leaders have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to the city’s progress, advocating for the construction of the new DPW facility to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of public services. With its modern design, streamlined operations, and consolidation of essential services, this state-of-the-art facility ensures that Annapolis can effectively address the diverse needs of its community.
